I'm Gonna Need Some Detox - December 27, 2008

I have one more day of Christmas break which I'm allowing for an unregulated diet.  And...it's been quite unregulated as in "no holds barred full-on eat fest."

I knew I was in trouble when I felt something uncomfortable at the top of my jeans.  I wondered, "Is something rubbing me?  Is it the denim?"  But it turned out to be the waistline from my underwear.  It's really digging in from an expanding waistline from the last few days.

But, if there is one saving grace from the personal eating debauchery, it's that I think I'm getting anxious to going home, going through a self-imposed nutritional detox and getting back to a regular training schedule.  The "fun foods" are starting to come into that law of diminishing returns phase of over-abundance.  The first serving of french fries and cookies is pretty good, but with each additional serving the pleasure is reduced.  I'm still craving some chocolate but that's about it at this point.

Tomorrow is a pizza party to watch the last Sunday of the regular season games for the NFL at my sisters house and I'll make sure I get my fill.  Then on Monday it's back to Atlanta (in the car).  That gives me the rest of the week to start getting back on a schedule.

Good Deeds Around the Holidays

A few of my sisters took Angela and I up into the artsy section of Buffalo this afternoon for a little shopping and lunch.  While we were walking down the road (a very busy road), we noticed a little old lady getting out of her car in the middle of traffic with a confused look on her face.  We asked, "what is wrong?" and she responded that, "I think I ran out of gas..."

The group of us immediately jumped to action to help her out.  We knew that there was a gas station behind her by about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile so we needed to get the car facing the other direction (and quickly).  The Polish Bobsled Team jumped into action and we started pushing with intent.

We were having a really fun time especially when a police car showed up and started flashing lights behind us.

Kulikowski 2008 096You can't make up stuff like this.  It can only happen in Buffalo?  Sure, it looked a little fishy.  Cars were staring at us and a bunch of Polacks were pushing an old lady's car down a busy road while laughing their heads off (there wasn't even that much alcohol served at our lunch?)

"Honest Officer!  We were doing a good deed at Christmas helping a little old lady!"

After a quick explanation, we cleared things up and the officer was a good sport about things.  My sister enjoyed taking some pictures of the Polish Bobsled Team Captain.  It's not a family Christmas until somebody screams, "I'm telling Mom on you!!!"

My niece and nephew from Orlando have never seen snow before and were up for the holiday.

We never told my niece not to eat the "yellow snow."  (Sometimes it's just best to let kids learn things in life on their own.)

Some streakers have to build up their endurance for 2009...

LOL... Polish bobsled team... Great pic! Too bad they didn't put you in the back of a paddy wagon :-)

Great pics Paul!

In my opinion, after each season/ training cycle, you just need to let things go for a while. Like a lot of athletes, I love to eat; that is sort of what drove me into the sport in the first place. I go through the same cycle you mentioned at the end of each season/ race cycle. First you just love eating fries and cookies, but your body eventually gets sick of it and is looking to jump back into good eating habits. Enjoy it and don't feel guilty about it.
